This blog post started as preparation for my review of Professional Troublemaker, The Fear-Fighter Manual.  Now I’m a fanboy, and this is taking up some time.  I’ll post my review at the end of the post and publish this post as soon as I’m done listening and reviewing.

Instant New York Times best seller                        Headshot of Luvvie Ajayi Jones, Professional Troublemaker, taken from her website https://luvvie.org/about-luvvie/

From the New York Times best-selling author of I’m Judging You, a hilarious and transformational book about how to tackle fear – that everlasting hater – and audaciously step into lives, careers, and legacies that go beyond even our wildest dreams

Luvvie Ajayi Jones is known for her trademark wit, warmth, and perpetual truth-telling. But even she’s been challenged by the enemy of progress known as fear. She was once afraid to call herself a writer, and nearly skipped out on doing a TED talk that changed her life because of imposter syndrome. As she shares in Professional Troublemaker, she’s not alone.

We’re all afraid. We’re afraid of asking for what we want because we’re afraid of hearing “no.” We’re afraid of being different, of being too much or not enough. We’re afraid of leaving behind the known for the unknown. But in order to do the things that will truly, meaningfully change our lives, we have to become professional troublemakers: people who are committed to not letting fear talk them out of the things they need to do or say to live free.

With humor and honesty, and guided by the influence of her professional troublemaking Nigerian grandmother, Funmilayo Faloyin, Luvvie walks us through what we must get right within ourselves before we can do the things that scare us; how to use our voice for a greater good; and how to put movement to the voice we’ve been silencing – because truth-telling is a muscle.

The point is not to be fearless, but to know we are afraid and charge forward regardless. It is to recognize that the things we must do are more significant than our fears. This book is about how to live boldly in spite of all the reasons we have to cower. Let’s go!

Finally, my review for Audible:              Headshot of Luvvie Ajayi Jones, Professional Troublemaker, taken from her website https://luvvie.org/about-luvvie/

I went out of my way to listen to this book because of the 4,8 out of 5-star rating (1,385 reviews).  I listened because I want to reach women, especially women of color, for this and other blogs that I do. I listened because I have daughters. Luvvie Ajayi Jones’s advice and reach are geared toward the underprivileged. The advice is good for men, too, if they take the time to listen – really listen.  I was only ten years old when I realized I was privileged. I was a young white male in America. At that time, when I realized my privilege, I couldn’t imagine being any luckier than I felt myself to be. If women and people of color can face the extra hurdles to success they face every day, men should be able to learn and grow and succeed relatively easily and do so NOT at the expense of non-white, non-male, non-cis folks.

Luvvie Ajayi Jones delivered. Though I got sidetracked – I had to look up her very popular TED Talk and give it a listen or three, which led me to her podcast, then her website, and her blog – after which I returned directly to her book.  Her voice is a great power for convincing yourself that “the enemy within” is the only enemy you need really fear. When you conquer the enemy within, you’re on solid ground to square off against any external foe.  Her voice, willingly absorbed,  is your reason to go boldly where you must go and to forthrightly do the things you must do. She helps you define who you are and what you believe – and believe in – in an off-beat and upbeat fashion. We all feel out of place at times.  Luvvie convinces you to convince yourself you’re never out of place. Whoever you are, you are enough!

The author narrated very well. Her voice was authentic, conveying nuance, emphasis, and emotion to the listener.  I’m not a fan of vulgarity, but her words didn’t offend because they sounded like punctuations in normal conversation. She used profanities justly, not gratuitously. I enjoyed listening at 1.0 speed (normally, I have to speed up the delivery a bit).

Regards,
Keith
